In the book of Exodus 30:13, the half shekel is mentioned in relation to a donation to the temple once a year by people over the age of 20. What is significant here is that it says the poor will give the same amount as the rich. We are all equal. Just because you have a little bit more means than someone else, does not mean that you are better in God’s eyes.
On one side of the half shekel we see a jar of mana that God commanded us to have in the ark of the covenant, and a paleo Hebrew all around. The paleo Hebrew says the year of 67, the second year of the Maccabi resistance. On the other side of the half shekel, you see Aaron’s scepter blooming with almond flowers. This was also commanded to be on the inside of the ark of the covenant. The paleo Hebrew on the second side of the coins says “the holy city of Jerusalem.”
